FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about our transfer station, bin rentals and services. Can't find yours? Call 250-537-2167 or email office@ssgarbage.com.

What do you accept at the transfer station?

We accept almost everything, including appliances and fridges, propane tanks, tires, mattresses, treated wood, stumps, batteries and vehicles. See the full accepted materials list. Item not listed? Please ask at the office window.

What can't I bring?

Paint, chemicals, liquids, oil, oil filters and jugs, antifreeze, food scraps, medicines, needles and medical waste, hot ashes, and hazardous waste. Asbestos is only accepted through our licensed transport service.

How much do tires and mattresses cost?

Tires are $7.50 each. Mattresses and box springs are $30 each. The $13 operational fee also applies, once per load, because they go across the scale.

Do you take propane tanks and fire extinguishers?

Yes. Propane tanks don't need to be empty. We also take fire extinguishers.

Do you take fridges, boats or old vehicles?

Yes. Fridges, freezers and air conditioners are charged by weight. Boats, vehicles and RVs can be brought as is; call for pricing.

Where can I take paint, chemicals and liquids?

Try the Island Community Services Recycle Depot, 349 Rainbow Rd (250-537-1200). Please call them to confirm what they accept.

How much does drop-off cost?

$13 operational fee on every load that goes across the scale. Dropping 1 or 2 bags of garbage in the bag-drop bin before the scale is $7 per bag with no operational fee. Weighed loads are $0.41/kg. Tires ($7.50) and mattresses or box springs ($30) are a flat fee each, plus the $13 fee. Try our drop-off cost estimator for a ballpark figure.

Can I drop off just a bag or two of garbage?

Yes. Use the bag-drop bin and skip the scale: $7 per bag, maximum 2 bags, no operational fee.

Can I bring green waste?

Yes. Bring grass clippings, leaves and garden trimmings. We turn them into compost.

Do you take drywall, and what does it cost?

Yes, at $0.41/kg, the same as garbage, if it is date-stamped or comes with a test report and is not mixed with other garbage. In a bin, drywall mixed with other garbage also triggers the $400 sorting fee (per bin). Every load needs a signed Declaration and Acknowledgement Form. Used or pre-1990 drywall needs an asbestos report showing no asbestos detected, on file before you offload.

Do you take appliances and electronics?

Yes. We take small appliances like toasters and microwaves, large appliances including fridges and freezers, electronics, batteries (household and car) and light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.

Where are you located?

We're at 360 Blackburn Rd, Salt Spring Island, BC V8K 2B8. Call 250-537-2167 or email office@ssgarbage.com.

What are your hours of operation?

We're open Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM–4:00 PM, and Saturday, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM. We're closed Sundays and holidays.

Do you offer residential garbage pickup?

No. We don't offer residential garbage pickup. You can bring household garbage to our transfer station.

Do you offer commercial garbage pickup?

Yes, daily, weekly or bi-weekly. Choose a 65-gallon toter (provided free to commercial customers) or an 1100 L (2 cubic yard) bin. See Commercial Garbage Pickup for pricing, or call 250-537-2167.

What bin sizes do you rent?

12-yard bins for residential customers and 40-yard bins for commercial customers. See Bin Rental.

How much does a bin rental cost?

The 12-yard bin is $250 and the 40-yard bin is $650, plus a $13 operational fee, $0.41/kg and $10/day (drop-off and pick-up days are free). Prices are subject to change.

Is there a deposit for bin rentals?

Yes. Once we confirm your bin and date, we send you a link to save a card with Clover for a $500 deposit. After the bin is weighed, we charge any amount above $500 or refund the difference.

What can't go in a rental bin?

Asbestos, liquids, paint, oil, oil filters, antifreeze and chemicals. A $400 sorting fee applies to any bin that contains banned materials. Drywall is OK if it is date-stamped or tested and not mixed with other garbage; mixed drywall also triggers the $400 sorting fee.

Is my online bin request a booking?

No. It's a request. We'll call to confirm bin availability and the schedule.

Can you haul away asbestos?

We are licensed to transport asbestos and batteries. See Asbestos & Battery Transport for how to prepare and request service.
